Campbell River

The Salmon Capital of the World

Campbell River or Wiwek̓a̱m is located on the east coast of Vancouver Island at the south end of the Discovery Passage and the north end of the Strait of Georgia. The closest communities are Quadra Island, Sayward, Gold River, Tahsis and the Comox Valley. It has a population of 37,000 making it the third largest city on the island. It marks the boundary between the more developed south and the wild natural areas in the northern part of the island.

Lifestyle and Recreation

People in Campbell River enjoy a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. Winter can bring snow be accumulations of 10 mm in January. There are four distinct seasons.  There is eco-adventures and internationally renowned salmon fishing to skiing at Mount Washington, safe streets to cultural treasures, fine dining to golfing, boutique shopping to advanced educational opportunities, community festivals to parks and trails for all ages and abilities. Campbell River has something for everyone.

Transportation

Campbell River is a city with public transportation, a network of paved roadways and highways and an airport that has services to many parts of Canada. These are first-class transportation and communications networks. Highway 28 from Gold River and the Inland Island Highway and the Old Island Highway all meet in Campbell River.

Education

School District 72 Campbell River is the governing body for schools in this area. There is a mixture of public and private schools with the complete range of grades, early and late French immersion, alternate programs, continuing education, Strong Start centers and the North Island College.
