Area

Tofino has a population of just under 2000 residents. Today, Tofino welcomes between 750,000 and a million visitors annually. The recognition of Clayoquot Sound by the United Nations as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in January 2000 is the region’s most recent international distinction, recognizing the area as one of unparalleled natural and cultural riches.

Lifestyle and Recreation

The west coast of Vancouver Island has beaches, parks, waterfront promenade, restaurants, galleries, shops, an aquarium and a marina. Recreation would include surfing, fishing, whale watching, kayaking, camping, hiking, storm watching, swimming, bicycling and beach combing. Tofino has mild winters yet cool summers making it a temperate oceanic zone.

History

The town is named after the Tofino inlet, which in turn was named after Admiral Vicente Tofino. The Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations have made Clayoquot Sound their home for several thousand years. The current town site of Tofino was officially established in 1909 on the Esowista peninsula. The village of Tofino was first incorporated in 1932. In 1959 a long-awaited logging road was punched through the mountains between Port Alberni and the coast. Today, Tofino is tourism and the economy is as well.

Tofino is a collection of houses of all ages and styles. There are the iconic west coast design homes but every other type of building both in commercial and residential markets. There are a total of 307 dwellings in Tofino. 54% of houses are single detached houses, walk up condos @ 16%, duplexes is 11.5%, semi-detached houses 9%, row houses are 6%, moveable dwellings at 3% and the remain uncategorized housing.  80.2% of homes are owner occupied and 20% are renter occupied.

Schools

The schools are part of the Alberni School District and have all levels K-12 available within the district. Residents of Ucluelet and nearby Tofino share schools and services.

Locations

Tofino is 40 km northwest of Ucluelet.  It is also 126 km west of Port Alberni and 316 km northwest of Victoria. Tofino is located in a geographical region called Clayoquot Sound.
